New Year, New Goals

Hello friends and happy (belated) New Year! I can't believe how long it has been since I wrote an ACTUAL blog post! If you have been following my Instagram and other social media handles, you know that there have been a lot of changes going on over here since May. 2015 was a very exciting, albeit chaotic, year for Adam and I, and 2016 promises to be even better! Last year, we decided to put our freshly purchased house back on the market, move 3 hours away from our friends and family, start two new jobs, postpone our wedding, welcome a new niece and many other blessings!

I am so thankful for a new year and a fresh start. Instead of making resolutions, I decided to make goals this year. I have recently become hooked on Pure Barre, and have revamped my nutrition and health goals! For me, staying committed to health and fitness is 95% mental. Thankfully, Meijer allows me to find everything I need in one place so that I have more time to smash my 2016 goals! Below are three things that I do to stay healthy and fit on a busy schedule.



PROTEIN SHAKE

My shaker cup and chocolate protein powder have become a constant sidekick lately! When I have the time, I love to mix in frozen fruit for a little extra flavor.  This is my go-to "treat" when I get home from a run or Pure Barre. It's important to replenish your protein within one hour of completing a workout! On the days that I have to head straight to work after Pure Barre, I make sure to take along an individual serving size of protein. Our provider's lounge at work has tiny almond milk cartons, making it easy for me to stay on track!

Try my favorite combination: 
1 serving chocolate protein powder (your choice)
1 cup frozen fruit
1 cup almond milk

Mix well in a blender and enjoy! It almost tastes TOO good to be healthy!




GYM BAG ESSENTIALS

Even when I work 12 hour shifts in the ER, I try not to skip my workout before I go in. I find that making time for fitness allows me to have a clear head and feel physically ready to conquer a long shift. I keep a bag with some simple essentials in my car:

Sticky socks (a Pure Barre essential!)
Hairbrush, hairties, headbands
Cleansing cloths (GREAT for freshening up on my way to work!)
Trail mix bars
Protein powder packs



FLAVORED WATER

Staying hydrated is certainly not a new or fancy health & beauty tip, but it is one that I live out daily! My friends will be the first to tell you that I always have my "fancy" water with me (haha)! It makes drinking water more "fun" when it looks so fancy, and it tastes delicious too. Some of my favorite combos are lemon/mint, strawberry/lemon, orange/blueberry, raspberry/cucumber and grapefruit/rosemary. I put all of the ingredients in the bottom of my glass or water bottle before adding ice and water. I continue to refill throughout the day, and the flavors keep infusing! To calculate your daily water requirement, divide your weight in half. The resulting number is how many ounces of water that you should consume. Be sure to add more to your daily intake if you are doing intense cardio or other sweaty activities!
