Date Night Maxi Dress + $500 VISA Giveaway [CLOSED]

SO MUCH EXCITING NEWS IN ONE POST!!! EEEEK!
Ok. Deeeeep breaths.

First, as a woman of my height, I have been yearning for a maxi dress that sweeps the floor for about as long as they have been in style. When I find one I like, it often is more of a midi-length dress than an elegant, floor-sweeping number. But fear not, my tall fashionistas! The search is over! I have had great luck finding maxis that are long enough for me this season! Praise be!! This gorgeous number was given to me as a gift and I was so excited to sport it for a date night with my hunny this weekend.

Guys, taking blog pictures is actually incredibly awkward.
See?! I'm a huge, real-life dork!

Dress: Gibson & Latimer | Jean Jacket: American Eagle Outfitters

Speaking of weekends, my preceptor (and therefore our team) was on call this weekend for the entire rehab hospital! It was a rough to get up and report for rounds at 6:30am, but I saw a lot of great patients and learned a TON! That being said, I didn't get much of a break going into this week - prayers for mental stamina are appreciated :) ...

The Outfit Skeleton

Now how's that for an attention grabbing title?! Haha let me explain. We have all been there: we get into a fashion "rut". I found myself in just such a predicament not too long ago. As I sat staring at my overflowing closet, I was totally uninspired and pouted (yes pouted!) that I had nothing to wear.

Enter: INSTAGRAM *angels singing, harps playing*. I became so inspired by all of these self-proclaimed "fashionistas", who were posting their daily outfits and frugal finds.  Suddenly, my closet didn't look so lackluster! I saw my existing pieces in a whole new light...I began mixing what I already had, and purging what I just didn't need or didn't wear. Day after day, I was finding outfits that inspired me to use similar items in my closet. I took what I liked from the inspiring outfit (the "OUTFIT SKELETON", if you will), and adding to it my own personality in the form of jewelry, scarves, extra layers, shoes, etc.

So, sweet friends, I present to you an outfit skeleton to ponder! The way I have the outfit styled, I would wear it to church, dinner, or maybe a casual office setting. It could easily be tweaked by losing the jeans and adding a pencil skirt, or trading out the peep toe pumps for a more spicy set of caged sandals.

What would you change about the outfit to make it your own?

Top: Forever 21 (ON SALE!!) | Blazer: eBay | Jeans: American Eagle Outfitters

Prints & Patterns (& Pencil Skirts!)

One of my "style secrets" is actually not really a secret at all. I gravitate toward shapes that I know work on my body...for example, pencil skirts. I LOVE PENCIL SKIRTS. I may be the queen of pencil skirts! After years of accruing, I am pretty sure every Pantone hue is represented on my neatly hung, rainbow organized collection! Kidding about the Pantone, not kidding about the organization...

Today's outfit encompasses pretty much everything I love in the form of clothing: stripes, florals, pink & green, and bold contrast. I consider stripes a neutral - they are a great backdrop to add a punch of color or mix other prints (leopard, polka dots, florals, etc.)! For those of you that get fits of anxiety at the thought of MIXING PRINTS, (Mom, this is for you! :)) start by experimenting with prints in the same color family, like the outfit below!

Photo credit goes to my "main squeeze" :)

Top: LOFT | Skirt: Banana Republic Outlet | Belt: Kohl's (came with other dress)
Scarf: Target | Watch: eBay | Shoes: J.Crew Factory

JCPenney is one of my favorite places to get pencil skirts. They have an amazing price point at $15-25 a skirt, and they bring back the same style each season in a plethora of colors! Here are some of my favorite picks:

Pencil Skirts
Top Row: 1 | 2 | 3
Middle Row: 4 | 5 (sold out) | 6
Bottom Row: 7 (option) | 8 (MY FAVORITE STYLE!!) | 9
How do you mix prints? Do you have a "go to" style/piece?

Hello friends! I hope you all had a great week! I had a bit of a roller coaster week...finding my stride with clinicals is proving to be tougher on some days than others.  Being with patients and fellow clinicians all day is really great, and I'm learning something new every time I turn around! There is just not any "down time" when I get home between all of my readings and online modules. I am working on making time for myself each day, and I'm sure things will get easier as I have more clinical experience under my belt.

On a positive note, my two classmates and I have the opportunity to experience weekend call/rounds next weekend, which I am really excited about! This month we are in a rehab hospital, and patients are divided into pulmonology, general rehab, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and stroke units. We generally deal with pulmonology and general rehab, so I'm very excited to see patients in a different specialty! That being said, each of us gets to take a day off this week in exchange for the days we will work this weekend...so I'm off today! WAHOO!!

How do you stay balanced? Any tips and tricks?

Flourish Boutique GIVEAWAY!! [CLOSED]

Today, I am honored (and so excited!!) to tell you about an adorable gem in Granger, IN called Flourish Boutique! I was contacted by them (before this blog even existed!) and was invited to be a VIP at their 5th Birthday Party & Fashion Show on June 20. As a "spring chicken" to the blogging world, I was humbled to say the least...and totally giddy to spend a night out with some of my favorite girls!

I went to college near where Flourish is located and the owner, Vanessa Cooreman Smith, just happens to be a fellow alumna of where I graduated! I have had the privilege of watching her business grow into the amazing boutique that it is today. Vanessa has basically taken any fashionista's idea of retail heaven (at least mine!) and made it into a real life place! The store is actually a beautiful, character-filled historic house tucked on a scenic, wooded lot at the intersection of two of the busiest streets in Granger.

The owner of Flourish (Vanessa) and I! GO BELLES!!

Yes, those are PINK GLITTER lines in the parking lot. I told you - this place is a playground for big girls!  Inside is just as whimsical and fashion-forward: pink and black decor, damask print walls, sparkling chandeliers and the friendliest, most knowledgeable staff I have ever had the fortune to shop with. I was able to go to the store a few days before the event to snap some shots of my favorite pieces.  Picking my "favorites" was hard...the racks were packed with treats for me to fall in love with!!

The Flourish girls do an amazing job of selecting styles and price points that really do cater to every body type AND every budget!  At Flourish, you will find super special pieces that won't break the bank, and being a grad student myself, I love that!  In addition to being budget-friendly, Flourish also has an entire room designated to their curvy clientele - how cool is that?!

How awesome is this dress?! I have never seen a vertical chevron and thought it was super special and in the perfect colors for spring/summer. I also loved this top and this one...the 3D flowers added a special touch to the one on the left, and the neckline on the mint top is so unique and flattering!

Excuse the messy dressing room! This skirt ended up coming home with me, and I'm still lusting over the cobalt blue beaded rose necklace! These necklaces are right on-trend right now!! I can't wait to style this beautiful piece over and over again!
As you can see, I am surrounded by stylish women!
L to R: my beautiful mom, friend Andrea, me, and my sister Nattie
PINK! TREATS! FLOWERS! The perfect GNO!
Look! The cupcakes matched my necklace!
Three of my favorite looks: Oh Sunny Day, Colorful Chevron (option),  Mint to Be Adorned
Fashion Show Finale! HAPPY BIRTHDAY FLOURISH!!
The night of the event was filled with delicious drinks and treats, a fashion show, giveaways, great sales...and of course, quality time with some of my favorite women! Every guest got a swag bag filled with special treats; mine contained a neon pink tank, chevron scarf (stay tuned to see me style that beaut!) and exclusive discounts! Vanessa and the Flourish girls did a beautiful job putting together a special night for their customers and friends. Flourish Boutique is truly a business that is built with the customer in mind...no detail goes unappreciated!!

SPEAKING OF GIVEAWAYS!!...The ladies of Flourish want YOU to be able to enjoy something special from their amazing collection of beautiful things! One lucky reader will win a $25 GIFT CARD to use in-store or online! Just enter the rafflecopter below! Giveaway runs until midnight on Thursday, July 19th, and is open to US residents only.
